Section 9 - Coaches

Coaches Draft - Hiring Coaches

Teams add coaches each year in the annual Coaches Draft as part of the GM Meetings during the preseason.  Prior to the draft, each team must go into the new season with no more than one head coach still on their roster, and no assistant coaches.  Assistant coaches are only in place for one season and must go back into the pool each year, unless they are promoted to head coach and kept in that postion in preparation for the upcoming year.  A team can also choose to fire all of their coaches before the Coaches Draft, and start from scratch.

Done over three rounds, teams needing head coaches pick in round 1, and all teams pick assistant coaches in rounds 2 and 3. Once this draft is completed, your coaching staff is set for the year and any changes or firings you make are subject to the coaching rules listed above.

For details on scoring for coaches, see Section 3 - Game Play and Scoring.

Coaching Eligibility

To be able to count points for his BPFL team in any particular week, a coach has to be actively coaching in the NFL that week as the designated head coach, either on the sidelines or in the coaching box.

If a coach is set to be absent that week for any reason other than being fired (which automatically disqualifies a coach from counting BPFL points), the league has to be notified before that week's lineup deadline.  Any GM can submit a notification to the league on any BPFL team's head coach eligibility, and it has to be backed up by a confirmed source coming directly from that team.  If a BPFL head coach is not deemed inactive before the deadline that week, his BPFL team will count points for him as if he was coaching regardless of whether he is present or not.

Coaching Substitutions

A BPFL head coach will automatically count in every game for his BPFL team from week to week.  When a head coach is on his bye week, the BPFL GM will be allowed to substitute his choice of assistants into the head coaching postiion for that one week.

In cases where a BPFL/NFL head coach will miss his particular game due to a noted absence - ie., health reasons, bereavement, personal, suspension, contract issue (odd, grey area cases to be voted on by other 7 GMs) - and he was properly deemed inactive by the league before the deadline (see eligibility above), a BPFL GM will be allowed to substitute one of his assistants in as a temporary head coach even though his head coach is not on bye.  If the head coach's excused absence lasts more than one game, the assistant who was substituted in will remain as the interm head coach indefinitely.  The remaining assistant can only be substituted in if the head coach is still absent and the interm head coach is on a bye, or if the interm head coach is fired.

Coaching Slots - Firing Coaches

Each BPFL team starts each season with three coaches - 1 head coach, and 2 assistant coaches.  As mentioned above, the head coach is your point counter and the assistant coaches are there for use in substituting for the head coach during bye weeks and excused absences (see above), or for promotion to the head coaching position when the head coach is fired.  If a GM would like to permanently replace his head coach with one of his assistants, he can choose between either of his two assistants when appointing a replacement.  If only one assistant remains on the roster, he is automatically appointed to the vacant head coaching position.

Also, a team cannot switch coaches at any time unless it is a case of bye week substituion or and excused absence as mentioned above.

Coaches can't be fired after the week 12 trade deadline within that same season.  If a GM wants to fire their coach and the deadline has passed, they will have to wait until after the season is complete before they can make the change.
